Banking
(1)Opening an account
When opening an account you will need your Alien Registration Card
or passport as a means of identification and your inkan (personal seal).
If you don't have an inkan, the bank may accept your signature.
You will be given an account passbook when you open an account. When
depositing and withdrawing money at the teller's window, you will need
the account number shown on the passbook. (You will also need your inkan
when withdrawing money.)
(2)ATM card (Cash card)
When opening an account, you may also receive an ATM card. Normal
banking hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., from Monday to Friday. Automatic
teller machines (ATM) can be used to withdraw money up until 7:00 p.m.
The ATM card will be mailed to your address in a few days after applying.
(3)Automatic utility payments
It is sometimes confusing when making payments for gas, water, electricity
and other services by bank transfer because of the various payment dates.
However, you can arrange to have all these payments automatically deducted
from your account each month, with a receipt being forwarded to you
after payment has been confirmed.
(4)Sending money abroad
Money can be sent abroad from most banks, but certain branches may
not be authorized for foreign exchange, and may require a few extra
days to go through a designated branch.
