Telephone installation

Go to the NTT Mito Branch and fill in the application form. Please take either your Alien Registration card or Passport with you as a means of identification. A telephone line costs 76,440 yen (72,000 yen + 800 yen contract fee + 5%tax). Installation is extra.

International Direct Dialing Calls
You can contact the other person directly by dialing 001 first.
For example, when you call a person in New York,

(1):The country Code of USA
(2):The area code in USA* Omit first"0" if there is one.
(3):The phone number of the other person

*There are two more companies which offer international direct dialing services besides KDD(001). These are IDC and ITJ. But they do not cover all areas in the world. To use them, dial 0061(IDC) or 0041(ITJ) instead of 001.

International Operator-assisted Calls
Dial 0051 and ask the operator for assistance on an international phone call. The ways of making phone calls are shown below.
Station-to-Station: Tell the operator the phone number you wish to call.
Person-to-Person: Have the operator call the person you wish to call. (No fee is charged if the person cannot be reached.)
Collect Calls: The Operator will confirm that the person dialed will agree to pay the fee.

Public telephones

The procedure for using public telephones is as follows :

1. Pick up the receiver.
2. Insert a coin or telephone card.
   
3. Dial the number.
   

Please note that,

• You can talk for up to a minute for 10 yen within the same area code.
  
• A beeping sound means the time is up. If you wish to continue your call, insert additional coins or another telephone card.
  
• No change will be returned when you insert 100 yen coins.
  

Telephone Charges

Telephone service and direct-dial calls are billed monthly. A bill will be mailed to you which you may pay in cash at NTT, any bank or post office, or at most convenience stores. You may also arrange to pay by "automatic bank transfer".
